Old Photo Restoration

Bring scanned prints and old family photos back to life. The AI restores faces, recovers detail lost to age and low-resolution scans, and upscales the result for reprinting.

What AI photo restoration does

Restores faces

Face restoration (GFPGAN) rebuilds eyes, skin and hair in faces that are soft, small or grainy, which is where old photos lose the most.

Recovers detail and clarity

Grain, softness and scanning noise are reduced while texture and edges are rebuilt.

Upscales for reprinting

Turn small scans into images large enough to reprint or frame, up to 4096 pixels on the longest side.

What it doesn't do

It doesn't remove large scratches, tears or stains, and it doesn't colorize black-and-white photos. Those need separate retouching.

Tips for restoring old photos

  1. 1

Scan at the highest quality you can

A flatbed scan beats a phone photo of the print. If you use a phone, avoid glare and shoot straight on.

  2. 2

    Crop out borders and frames

Cropping to the photo itself keeps more pixels on the faces.

  3. 3

    Keep the original

Restoration predicts detail, so faces can look slightly different. Keep the original scan next to the restored version.
