Why Photos Look Worse After WhatsApp or Instagram (and How to Fix Them)

Messaging apps and social networks shrink and recompress your photos. Learn why it happens, how to avoid it, and how to restore quality to photos that are already compressed.

A photo looks great on the phone that took it. Someone sends it to you on WhatsApp, or you save it from Instagram, and suddenly it's soft, blotchy and smaller. You're not imagining it: the photo really did lose quality on the way.

Why apps reduce photo quality

Messaging apps and social networks handle billions of photos. To keep uploads fast and storage costs down, they usually do two things to every image:

  1. Resize it. Large photos are scaled down to a fixed maximum size. Instagram, for example, displays feed photos at up to 1080 pixels wide, even if you uploaded a 4000-pixel original.
  2. Recompress it. The photo is saved again as a JPEG with stronger compression. JPEG throws away fine detail it thinks you won't notice, and each extra save throws away more.

The result is a photo with fewer pixels and visible compression artifacts: blocky patches in smooth areas like skies, "mosquito noise" around sharp edges, and smeared texture in hair, grass and fabric.

Screenshots of photos add another problem. They capture the photo at your screen's size, often with interface elements around it, and then get compressed again when shared.

How to avoid losing quality in the first place

  • Ask for the original. If someone has the photo on their phone, ask them to send it as a file or document instead of as a photo, or to share it through a cloud link. Files usually keep their full quality.
  • Use the HD option. Newer versions of WhatsApp let you choose HD quality when sending a photo, which keeps more resolution than the standard setting.
  • Don't screenshot photos. Save or download the image instead, so you get the photo itself rather than a capture of your screen.
  • Keep your own originals. Back up the files from your camera roll before you post them anywhere.

How to fix a photo that's already compressed

Sometimes the compressed copy is the only one left, like an old WhatsApp photo from a phone that's long gone. Here AI enhancement helps in two ways at once:

  • It removes compression artifacts by recognizing the typical block and halo patterns and replacing them with plausible clean texture.
  • It restores resolution by upscaling the image and predicting the detail that the app's resizing threw away.

For a typical chat-app photo:

  1. Save the photo directly from the chat (not as a screenshot).
  2. Upload it to the photo quality enhancer.
  3. Choose 2x for photos you'll share again, or 4x if you want to print them or view them on a big screen.
  4. Turn on Enhance faces if there are people in the photo. Compression hits small faces especially hard.
  5. Compare the before and after with the slider, then download the result as a PNG, so it isn't compressed again.

What to expect

Photos that were only resized and compressed once or twice usually improve a lot: smoother skies, sharper edges and clearer faces. Photos that were forwarded many times, screenshotted, or were tiny to begin with improve less, because each round removed information that can't be fully recovered. The AI will still clean them up, but it fills in detail by prediction, so very small text or faces may not match the original exactly.

Each photo costs 1 credit at 2x or 4x, new accounts get free credits, and if an enhancement fails, the credit is refunded automatically.
